Focussed Courses

These courses are offered in the afternoons in periods 5 through 7. They are intended for higher level students (level 6 - mid intermediate and higher) looking to learn English for specific fields, exams or higher education. They must be taken in combination with period 5. Unlike Elective Workshops, Focussed Courses require pre-registration and cannot be changed weekly.

Focussed courses include:

TOEFL Preparation

The course emphasizes the four main components of the TOEFL: listening comprehension, grammar structure, written expression, and vocabulary. In addition to your primary text you will work with a variety of material, including audio exercises and computer programs to ensure your success on the TOEFL.

Non-test review classes for all language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) will ensure that you have a solid foundation for the exam. Skills and Strategies for each of the sections of the test are provided with clearly defined steps to improve performance on the test. Complete tests, in both paper and computer format for the TOEFL, will allow you the experience of taking the actual exam.

TOEIC Preparation

The course is based on the requirements of the TOEIC exam and focuses on the development of language skills (utilizing audio/visual and computer methods) essential for effective everyday communication in the world of business. In addition, students may choose to have classes on computer and Internet vocabulary included in their course. Customized courses for corporate clients in a variety of fields are also available. Students who intend to take the TOEIC test are taught test taking strategies and given sample exams for practice. 

The TOEIC Preparation Course includes: Diagnostic test prior to starting the course to show areas in which you have difficulty. You must obtain a minimum score of 440 to take the TOEFL course and 600 to take the TOEIC course. Skills and Strategies for each of the sections of the test are provided with clearly defined steps to improve performance on the test.

English for Hospitality:

This course is designed specifically for those either working in or looking to work in the hospitality industry - hotels, tourism, food services and guest services.

Course content focusses on English use in various aspects of the hospitality industry. In addition to in class instruction, the course incorporates real life situational practice, presentations, guest speakers and field trips.

International Business Communication:

More than ever, a good knowledge of English is needed to succeed in international business and commerce. If you are an established professional or just starting your career consider the International Business English program for developing your English skills for communication in the world of business. The International Business Communication Program will enable you to improve your vocabulary, writing and listening abilities so that you may effectively function in business situations involving face to face meetings, writing correspondence, making presentations, negotiating and even business lunches and social gatherings.

As part of the program you will meet with local and international corporate leaders, visit workplaces and international trade centres such as the Toronto Stock Exchange. learning the language etiquette involved in meetings and business lunches

In addition, you will learn about North American business customs and practices and vocabulary for your particular field of work or study.

IELTS Preparation:

This program ensures that you have the English knowledge and test preparedness required to excel on the IELTS. In addition to your primary text you will work with a variety of material, including audio exercises and computer programs to ensure your success on the IELTS.

The primary objective of the Quest Exam Programs is to prepare students for examination success and not to teach everyday English. As such, an entrance test to determine sufficient knowledge of English is required.

Academic Writing

This course is designed to enable students to write effectively for academic purposes. However, it can be taken by anyone wishing to take their English skills to a higher level. Students will develop their skills through a variety of writing and research assignments.

The program will provides students with the ability to :
